Mineola celebrates May Fiesta

Classic vehicles from many eras lined downtown Mineola streets Saturday as part of the activities for May Fiesta, the Mineola Chamber of Commerce event celebrating Hispanic heritage and Cinco de Mayo. The day marks Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 and is said to be more popular in the U.S. than Mexico. It is sometimes confused with Mexican independence day in September.

The May Fiesta, sponsored by the Mineola Area Chamber of Commerce, filled downtown Mineola Saturday with colorful sights and sounds from mariachi bands to revving engines.
Among the events were two performances by Mineola’s own folklorico dancers, with music by Mariachi Real de Dallas and a Selena tribute by Luzy Tinajero. Children got to try their luck at pinata bashing while those brave enough took on the pepper-eating contest. A car show also graced much of N. Johnson St.
Food vendors and non-profit organizations also set up booths
