Metal detector giving program for county genealogical society

Posted

The Wood County Genealogy Society will meet  Monday, March 18 at 5 p.m.  at the Quitman Public Library, 202 E. Goode St.

Speaker will be  Jerry Tinney on “Metal Detecting History Connecting to Genealogy.”

Tinney is a Cottonwood resident and past president of the Wood County Metal Detecting Club in Quitman. Jerry gives his father, Cecil Tinney, the credit for his interest in metal detecting.

It all starts with research. The hobby of metal detecting is really all about digging up history. And, in this game, history begets history.

Talking to Jerry about his hobby reveals a natural curiosity for what people did who preceded us in Wood County and why.  He has an array of historical tidbits he has collected – coins, watch components, buggy parts, jewelry, toys, tools, and commercial tokens among them.

Metal detecting and genealogy can go hand and hand. What and how ancestors lived their lives by items found can help understand them.

Everyone is welcome. Members can help with family tree history.
